Why hair matters in artistic swimming
Hair in artistic swimming is certainly not optional. It must be identical across the team, unmoving, and capable of surviving throws, flips, and minutes upside down underwater. Hairspray? Completely useless; one splash of water and it’s gone. Gelatin, however, does not give up that easily.

Why gelatin works
Gelatin is made from collagen protein that melts in hot water and hardens into a strong, flexible gel as it cools. Once it is painted onto slicked-back hair and allowed to set, it creates what is essentially a waterproof helmet. Unlike hairspray, gelatin:

The morning of a competition, swimmers have to get up before sunrise to make sure every hair follicle on the team is accounted for.

The real challenge however, comes after the application process.
Once it sets, your hair becomes rock hard. Not “strong hold” hard—more like tap-your-hear-and-hear-a-knock hard. Turning your head feels extremely painful and slightly illegal.
But that’s not all: next is the dripping. Before it sets, warm gelatin has the habit of running down your neck, ears, and forehead and dries wherever it lands. Congratulations, not only do you have a stinky, stiff, shiny head, but you now also have stinky, stiff, shiny streaks on your skin that restrict your range of motion for the rest of the day.
And of course, the worst part comes last: removal. Because gelatin has fully hardened into your hair, it requires steaming water, excessive conditioner, patience, and emotional resilience to get it out. Sometimes you will just have to accept the fact that you will find pieces of gelatin in your hair for the next week.

Still, there’s something oddly comforting about it. Gelatin is one of those strange traditions that turns chaos into uniformity. And in a sport where precision matters, it’s only fitting that our unofficial uniform requires perfect measurements and application to get it right.
Using gelatin is a perfect example of how artistic swimming blends science and sport. A basic kitchen ingredient becomes a technical solution to a very specific problem, performance under water.
